Singer-songwriter Yeng Constantino released her brand new album with Star Music called “Synesthesia.” Apart from the word being a catchy title, Yeng made a recent discovery, thanks to her husband, that made her realize how important this word is in her life.
In medical terms, synesthesia is a neurological condition, a “perceptual condition in which the stimulation of one sense triggers an automatic, involuntary experience in another sense.” According to Mother Nature Network, people with this condition “may see sounds, taste words or feel a sensation on their skin when they smell certain scents.”
The famous musician thought that this rare experience was felt by most people. Yeng Constantino would start to see vivid colors whenever she eats, hears music, or sees people. She further elaborated on her situation when she was interviewed by ABS-CBN news.
“Parang may kinain ako, eh nakakakita ako ng colors, or kapag may narinig akong kanta, may nakikita akong color, kapag nakakakita ako ng tao, nakakakita ako ng color… Parang ito ‘yung normal na sense for me, pero sa ibang tao hindi siya normal.“
This startling discovery was made when Yeng was with her husband, Yan Asuncion. They were eating quite peacefully when the singer pointed out that what she ate seemed like the color purple.
“Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Alam mo love, itong food na ito parang purple ‘yung kulay niya.’ Sabi ni Yan, ‘Ha?’ Hindi purple ang kulay ng food ko, I mean purple ang kulay ng taste niya. Sabi ni Yan, ‘Baka may synesthesia ka na.’ Tapos Ginoogle ko. Sobrang eksakto kung ano ang description doon. So ‘yung mga tao kapag kumakain nakakakita ng kulay or parang naa-associate nila ‘yung taste with colors or kapag nakikinig sila ng sound na-a-associate nila with colors.“
We have to admit though, it’s quite cool to actually see living colors whenever you interact with someone. It makes us wonder, what color do you see when you meet us Yeng?
From the description provided above, do you think you the same condition as Yeng Constantino? Can you share your favorite food with us and what color you associate it with? Share your thoughts, reactions, and opinions in the comments section below!
