“I have the right to do it like everybody else.” In just a few words, Jake Zyrus shut down those who kept throwing rocks his way after he debuted his first-ever topless photo on Instagram. For a society that’s intolerant to progressive movements such as LGBT liberation, this move from the singer was undeniably bold and disruptive—but it wouldn’t hold him back from being proud of himself all the same.
The aforementioned photo was taken from a recent getaway in Anguib Beach in Cagayan. For the particular post, it’s worth noticing that Jake, who has had his fair share of attacks and criticism from the mighty citizens of the Internet by now, turned off his commenting function.
The caption reads:
“Di pa game eh. Pero yung go pro atat. Kala mo tuloy naghahanap ng away. Hahaha!”
During his guesting in DJ Jhai Ho’s Hostpot, the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) staple said that this is already not a big deal to him. In fact, even in the face of hate, Jake retaliates with nothing but kindness.
“Naiintindihan ko po yun na parang medyo wild para sa kanila to see a trans man na nakatopless.”
For him, every social media user is welcome to use the platform however they want. In his case, it’s his due to post the topless photo just because he wanted to.
“If you want to post a photo na alam mong confident ka, na alam mong proud ka, then why not.”
It was during his transition last year when Jake underwent a breast removal procedure through female to male (FTM) chest reconstruction surgery, or what they call as “top surgery“, from Dr. Manny and Pie Calayan.
You do you, Jake!
