Col. Arnaud Beltrame, An Epitome of A Real-life Superhero

Are you a fan of Marvel? Or maybe you are more of a DC person? Do you read comic books or watch movies about the superheroes and their superpowers? Well, I for one do! But this is a story of a real heroic deed, exactly different from what we read from the books and see at the movies. This is a story of a man, with no superpowers, only a heart dedicated to his work: a real-life superhero.

Haven’t we all heard stories about hostages and kidnappings? Most of them end on a happy note, saving all the hostages or the kidnaps, but there are also other stories that ended mournfully. This article is about the heartbreaking yet inspiring story of how a simple police officer became a hero we will never forget.

Col. Arnaud Beltrame was one of the police officers who quickly responded to a hostage taking that took place in France. According to sources, the hostage-taking lasted for four hours and it began when Moroccan-born hostage taker Redouane Lakdim hijacked a car and then fired at police officers who were jogging around Carcassone in France.

Lakdim then took a number of hostages in a supermarket 100 kilometers away, shooting and killing two people in the market. This pushed police officer Beltrame to sacrifice and exchange himself for a female hostage. His plan all along was to enter the supermarket premise, keep his cellphone on, so that the police outside could hear what is happening inside and be able to get their signal to enter.

During the deadlock, Lakdim requested for the release of Salah Abdeslam, the sole survivor among the attackers in the assault made in Paris in 2015. The interior minister was not convinced that Abdeslam’s release was the real motive of the attack.

According to some sources, the hostage taker shouted  “Allahu akbar! (God is great)” and that he is a soldier of the Islamic state.

One of the survivors, Christian Guibbert, stated

“We heard an explosion — well, several explosions, “I went to see what was happening and I saw a man lying on the floor and another person, very agitated, who had a gun in one hand and a knife in the other.”
