An old taxi driver from Manila gains praises for adopting his niece’s six children after she had succumbed to cancer. His inspiring story was featured on a popular Facebook page called “Humans of New York” (The Philippines). The post drew a lot of attention from its followers – generating 145k likes and 5k shares 10 hours after it was posted.
The post included Manong driver’s photo grinning and posing beside his parked cab somewhere in the streets of Manila. The 75-year-old driver narrated that six years ago, her beloved niece was diagnosed with cancer. She had asked him a favor before she passed away: take care of her six children.
Manong was already retired by then, but he had no choice but to go back to work for the kids. He loved his niece’s children like his own. The eldest was only eight years old. He lets all of them call him “Papa.” Although he was a senior citizen, he retained his a clear vision. The driver can tirelessly work for long hours without needing to rest. He gets his strength from the kids. He also gets a lot of support from his wife and siblings who help lighten the load.
Whenever he gets exhausted the children would take a vacation at their Aunt’s place, but they wouldn’t stay for long because their Papa would easily miss them.
The Humans of New York is a New York-based page that shares photos and stories of citizens. The page had extended featuring of its stories from different capital cities of countries. The driver’s story was able to reach netizens from abroad who shared their sentiments. Some had praised the man for his love and kindness towards his adopted children. Some are already talking about raising funds for the driver’s family.
