“Maalaala Mo Kaya” released an episode tackling the inspiring story of Norman King, the first Aeta graduate that UP Manila has seen. Viewers were treated with a close look at the hardships Norman’s family faced and it earned them sympathy. But the Central Luzon Aeta Association released an official statement condemning the glorification of Roman King, Norman’s father.
Although they applaud the incredible heights that Norman has achieved, they stated that they will not sit quietly when a man who has contributed to their sufferings was regaled as a hero. The Facebook page “No To Development Agression” shared the statement that said Roman King was an ally of greedy capitalists who have taken advantage of their land.
The group shares that Roman is proud of the foreign name given to them by an American soldier. He continues to believe that the decades-long reign of the United States has brought the Filipino nothing but good, contrary to the belief of his fellow Aetas.
Roman was also accused of orchestrating the selling of lands to non-natives who went on to build resorts that do not benefit their tribe whatsoever. They know that this is a big pill to swallow but they are urging us to think.
Who would we believe? A famous man who has an accomplished son loved by many or the consistent and numerous statements made by his community against him?
