“Isang kababayan na naman po natin ang nakaahon sa kahirapan,” is just of the many tasteless snide remarks a Pinay with a foreigner husband usually hears. These Filipinas are always being stereotyped as ‘gold diggers,’ and it is always assumed that they just married their foreigner husbands because of their money.
Regina Hoover, a Filipina netizen, hopes to break this stigma by sharing her experience with her husband, an American. Her married life would make you realize that some stories are very far from what they are made up to be by judgmental strangers. First and foremost, she married out of love, not out of any other reason.
Indeed, it would be difficult to imagine how the two could have lasted 9 years and raised two beautiful children if the relationship wasn’t built on love.
Sure, they met online, but that’s quite a common beginning for a modern love story! They developed their relationship through virtual communication and letters, but it didn’t take long for the two to fall madly in love.
He was 31, she was 24. Wedding bells chimed.
If you’re imagining that Regina was flown to the Dream Land by her American fiance, the exact opposite actually happened.
The man moved to the Philippines, and he had a hard time adapting and finding a job at first. Yes, it came to a point where Regina was the one who had to finance her foreigner husband. She didn’t mind doing so — again, she married for love, not for the promise of comfort and luxury.
Through sheer determination to provide for her wife, the man soon landed a job. Even then, Regina didn’t stop working. They worked hand in hand for their family, which eventually grew to four. They even encountered problems because of her condition of having polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Now, however, they have two beautiful children. Regina is a full-time housewife and mother now, standing as a strong pillar for their incredible family.
