Newborn baby was found abandoned inside a storm water drain amid colony of red ants

A newborn baby was found abandoned inside one of the storm water drains in South Africa. According to a report by The Sun, the infant’s survival was hailed as a “miracle” after it was found that she was left amid a colony of stinging red ants.

A 63-year-old woman named Charmaine Keevy narrated how she accidentally found the newborn. She said she was walking her dog one morning in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, when it suddenly started barking at something inside the drain duct by the gutter. Curious, Charmaine said she went down on her knees to see what the fuss was about. To her shock, she heard a noise coming from the drain.

She initially thought it was a cat, but upon listening more closely, Charmaine realized that it was the sound of a baby crying. She then tried to flag down cars to ask for assistance, and someone luckily stopped to help.

The man who pulled over was 60-year-old Cornie Viljoen, who also listened to the noise that was coming from the water drain. When he heard that it was indeed the sobs of an infant, he removed the concrete slab covering the opening by using a steel bar he got from his car.

Once opened, Cornie jumped down into the drain to look for the baby. He was horrified to see that he had landed on a colony of red ants, but he immediately grabbed the newborn away from it.

“The baby was lucky the red ants were higher up in the drain and not down at the bottom where she was,” Cornie said.

He then told Charmaine to call the emergency services for help. When the paramedics arrived, the baby was immediately rushed to the Dora Nginza Hospital and treated right away for hypothermia.

According to police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the person who abandoned the infant may have come from outside the area and left the baby in the drain. She appealed for witnesses and the mother to come forward for the sake of the newborn.

For her part, Charmaine was just happy that she found the baby girl while she was taking a walk:

“I cannot help but feel that there is some sort of a plan and a purpose for that little girls’ life – it is a miracle without a doubt.”

As of writing, authorities are currently trying to locate the baby’s mother.
