According to World Health Organization, disability is a general term for problems in body function and implementation of action. Prevailing over the obstacles people with disabilities face needs interference in order to break social and environmental barriers. In our society nowadays, people tend to judge others based on their physical appearance. People with disabilities often suffer from this kind of treatment from other people. For them to be able to cope with people in our society, acceptance and understanding should start within ourselves.
Disability may hinder a person from many activities he or she can do but many people who suffers from their impairments made great impact in our world. Many of you may have already known or saw on the internet who Stephen Hawking is. He is a theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, cosmologist, and a scientist who suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. For more than 30 years, he was paralyzed from head to toe but his disability did not prevent him from achieving his goal to become a very successful professor and researcher with his study that made a great impact in our world.

In a viral video uploaded by PINAS Mix Shared Videos, a guy can be seen singing Rodel Naval’s “Lumayo ka man sa Akin” song in a public place. As seen in the video, he had difficulty in holding the microphone while singing but despite his disability, his talent in singing is astonishing. He was not afraid to show his talent to other people and that inspired many netizens. The video attracted people and reached 888,000 views. Many of the netizens commented how surprised they are upon hearing the guy’s singing voice, many expressed how inspired they are with him given that his disability did not hinder him from performing and showing his talent to other people. His talent in singing is more than to compensate for his disability. With that quality of voice, he could have a shot in the music industry.
People with disabilities are part of our society. We all have our roles in this world. Accepting and understanding things beyond the “norm” is part of our society growing. People should not think that having disability lessens your worth as a person but rather think that disability as motivation to strive harder, and to be more understanding for others. Our world needs more people with open minds and caring hearts.
