Social media accessibility and ease of use have made it easier for all of us to connect with people we barely know. It is true that its primary use is communication with loved ones far from us, but we cannot deny the fact that most of the time, we use it for more than that.
Commenting on someone else’s posts, passing judgments and insights on important (and not-so-important) issues, gaining knowledge of strangers are just some of the things social media introduced to us. Have you ever imagined something as powerful as a tool like social media would be so easy to access? We can practically find out whatever we want if we are good at it!
Of course, the advent of social networking sites has advantages and disadvantages. It is so easy to pass judgments when you are sitting comfortably in your home, hiding behind your profile picture, because you do not actually have to face the immediate consequences of your words. This fact gave people the unearned confidence to just post whatever they want on the internet. If this is true, does social media really make us cruel online?
In this Malaysian mother’s case, yes it does. The young mom of four was recently the target of body-shamers. But what we should know about this mom is that she carried four babies in her body, all at once! Knowing this, you would think that netizens would be kinder, but sadly, that is not what happened.

Doreen Ching, 23, proudly shared her journey as a young mother of quadruplets. A pregnancy will definitely change a woman’s body, but Doreen narrated how much she worried what four babies would do to her body. Along with a picture of her stomach marred with stretch marks, she posted,
“Only 21 at the time, I wondered how I would be able to accept my stomach looking like this for the rest of my life. The first thing I did after leaving the delivery room was to look at my stomach and cry.”
Despite the hurtful comments about how her stomach looks, Doreen refused to react negatively. Instead, she responded with a plea,
“Some men said it was all the women’s fault for wanting to have so many kids. Please respect the women of this world, such as your mother and your wife, who manage childbirth and still work. Can you do that?”
But in social media, kind people also exist to balance it out. Many netizens, especially women, defended Doreen Ching and applauded her for her bravery in sharing the insecurities pregnancy gave left her.
And those marks will eventually fade, but the four children she gave birth to will give her happiness that no one could ever take away.
